I really found this article to be useful as I'm in the process of getting everything ready such as the software necessary and the protocols that I'm planing on using and the business cards, but I wasn't able to download your templates for invoice and most importantly the EULA that you originally posted but is no longer available for download through the link. I would also like to know what software you use for different issues or maybe you could make an article entry with more specific recommendations. Thank you and I really like your website

The concept here is interesting, but I don't have that much experience with the technical issues of the pc, and I have yet to be of great help to my friends and relatives. Therefore, it remains a distant dream for me to charge people for not fixing their computers the way I should (but who knows, I might get better at it and try your tips here)

I don't do this professionally, just more of a side thing since I became interested while in the active duty military. One very useful tool is a good vacuum cleaner. Dust cans just spread everything out. A good vacuum cleaner with proper attachments is key.

Fortunately, I have a Kirby vacuum at the house with electronics attachments that I can use to get into the smallest areas safely. Not the ideal economical choice for starting out, but something to keep in mind if you go larger scale.

I have not met a single PC that didn't need a good cleaning when I get involved.

Hiren's is great. As your company expands, you won't be able to use it. Technicians forget CDs in drives all the time, and Hiren's is pirated by nature.

Also -- with the rise of the netbook, you should probably focus your toolkit on USB drives.

Yeah -- a clause in the TOS/contract they sign is them giving you permission. :)

For what it's worth -- my attorney used Apple's as a template.

Can I repeat this?

**DO NOT MAKE A BACKUP WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION. IT IS ******* ILLEGAL.**

And, if you do this full-time, you should invest in E&O Insurance at ~$1k-5k/yr. It sounds expensive but it's the legitimate way of doing things. If you continue to grow, at some point you *will* be sued. If you want to continue as a company afterward... you'll need the E&O. General liability won't cut it.

True enough Ryan. But you could add a clause in the Service Agreement which allows the technician to back up the data and keep it secure.

Making copies of their data without their permission is criminal theft.

I wouldn't recommend this.

That is a valid concern. But you have to remember that there is a possibility of much greater harm caused by losing the data than the remote chance of identity theft. The chance of damage is more by not backing up the data than by backing it up. Those type of people who don't back up their own data are the type who'd probably get their data stolen easier from their own computer than from a tech repair guy who has some security know-how.

Anyway, people who are genuinely concerned about their own privacy should simply let their repair guy know that their data is private, and have it backed up, so there is no need for the repair guy to do it. If I have some files that I want to keep private, I would back it up before I send it for repair.

So, if the customer doesn't want you to take a backup, and you do anyway, aren't you violating their privay? I'd have some very serious concerns about this, what with all the rampant identity theft out there. What if you loose that backup and someone finds it, why they'd get access to stored passwords, quicken data, possibly credit card statements, etc.

What do you do to protect your customers from this eventuality, and how would you defend your sneaking a backup in court should it come to that?

I started and sold a consumer PC repair company. I incorporated and was extremely professional. We were very profitable and grew quite well with fixed prices at about 80% of Geek Squad's. (we actually came out simultaneously and targeted them directly in our marketing)

The trick: professional marketing.

Tip: better technicians can do the same work in a lot less time.

Note to consumers: in-store service is vastly better than on-site, assuming the company cares enough to take ownership of your problems. we started on-site only and the goal was often to make the customer happy and get out! after opening a store location, we would proactively test hardware, apply every software update we could find, etc... all for less than on-site visits. why? because we could multi-task and work on a half dozen machines simultaneously.

DO NOT ghost or image the drive if you suspect it's about to die and you may only have time to save a few files. Save those first.
