I wrote an app for Windows that can help with RSI and CTS, called Breevy (click my name right above this comment for the website).

You can use it to cut your typing workload by associating abbreviations with longer words, phrases, sentences, etc.

So instead of typing your e-mail address, you can type 'eml' in any app and Breevy will replace it with your e-mail address. Instead of typing a certain URL you can type 'url', and so on.

Programmers can use it to insert code snippets anywhere. Have it replace 'iif' with if () { }, 'prf' with printf("");, 'foo' with a function you often call, etc.

Hope this helps.

Oh another tip:

Learn to mouse with your other hand. If your mouse hand is sore then giving it a break could make a huge difference.

I use the mouse left-handed at work and right-handed at home (for games) and this one change made my CTS manageable.

Posture, a decent chair, an ergonomic keyboard and learning vim all help too. Most importantly - don't ignore the pain!

Programmers: Instead of changing your keyboard layout, learn vim! There are vim extensions for many major development environments, and the vi/vim keys result in less use of the mouse and arrow keys, hence less stress on your hands and wrists.

Non-programmers can use the vim keys too (see ViEmu for Word/Outlook vim extensions)

Try the Colemak layout over the Dvorak layout. It has more words in the home row, and reduces the use of the bottom row.

What worked for me was switching from a mouse to a pen device. The constant mouse clicking was what was causing me strain in my wrist. At first I tried switching to my left hand, then tried trackballs, but none of that helped. When I switched to a pen input device, it was like magic. The soreness cleared up and has been gone for years now.
